LightningVolt™ lithium battery related FAQs

Yes, the LightningVolt Bluetooth App is available as a free download from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
100A continuous discharge rate. Peak discharge is capable at 150A but is not recommended.
LightningVolt LV1300-T models are the only batteries designed specifically for series connections. A maximum of 4 batteries may be connected in series to create a 48V battery bank system. Multiple 48V banks can be connected in parallel to increase capacity of a 48V system. We do not recommend connecting more than 4 batteries in series and do not recommend connecting other lithium batteries in series. The LightningVolt designed series batteries specifically for use with trolling motors and solar applications.
The LightingVolt battery monitoring app can tell you if your battery is in protection mode or another status. Alternatively, if you are measuring zero voltage across the terminals, it is likely the BMS has tripped to protect the battery. Just reset the battery by disconnecting the battery leads for a few seconds. Be sure to correct the issue that might have enabled protection mode.
Simply use the power control button to cycle the battery on and off. Be sure to correct the issue that enabled protection mode.
A warranty is only as good as the company offering it. Roadwarrior guarantees a replacement or full refund if you have an issue with a LightningVolt battery, we cannot say the same for competitors. LightningVolt batteries are rated for heavy use in extreme conditions and capable of being drained and recharged day after day, after day. If the battery was only used recreationally under ideal conditions it would likely last more than 10 years. Our battery is rated for heavy-duty applications and built for freezing as well as high temperature conditions so you can use a LightningVolt battery hard with confidence!
Float voltage is not recommended, but up to 14.6V is possible.
Just use it very hard. LightningVolt batteries like to work. Deep discharge, fast recharge and frequent cycling are all perfectly safe for long-term operation for your LightningVolt battery and covered under warranty.
50A or 0.5C is the maximum recommended charge rate.
LightningVolt LV1300-T models have been specifically designed to be connected in series to build 24V, 36V, or up to 48V battery banks. We offer 24V, 36V, and 48V packages with chargers.
Not at this time but we recommend connecting multiple batteries in parallel to get as much capacity as you need.

No, LightningVolt is a lithium battery for deep cycle applications and cannot be used for engine cranking or starting.
No, but the LightningVolt Bluetooth app can be used to monitor the battery and get real time status and performance.
The built-in battery management system prevents LightningVolt batteries from being overcharged.
Yes, a battery isolation device such as a relay, DC to DC charger, separator or isolator is recommended. Many truck, RV and boat charging systems with multiple battery banks should already contain such a device to separate the house and starting battery banks. Direct connection is possible if the battery banks are of similar capacity and all batteries are in good condition. LightningVolt batteries were originally designed for trucking applications so, will safely maintain a float charge on lead acid batteries which will extend the life of the lead acid battery bank but will discharge your LightningVolt batteries over time. Do not connect batteries to each other which are at very different voltages (>0.2V)
No special conditions are required for storage, just use the LightningVolt power control button to disconnect the battery.
LightningVolt batteries ship with a 30-50% SOC (State Of Charge).
LightningVolt batteries ship with a 30-50% SOC (State Of Charge), they can be used immediately or charged to full capacity. It is strongly recommended to charge batteries connected in series to full before the first use.
LightningVolt batteries are designed to work with your RV’s charging system or can be charged via shore power and our compatible AC charger.
Yes, LightningVolt batteries are compatible with 12V, 24V, and 48V power inverters. The battery bank must match the voltage of the inverter.
Yes.
The batteries are water proof, but the electrical connections should not be submerged and should be shielded where possible.
Yes, when paired with an appropriate solar charge convertor and/or inverter LightningVolt are ideal for use within a solar power system.
Undervoltage (10.0V) Overvoltage (14.6V)
Yes, one of the greatest advantages of the LightningVolt is that it maintains much more power as the temperature drops below freezing. This was an important consideration when designing a battery for heavy duty trucking applications that must work in all weather conditions.
Yes. LightningVolt batteries are freeze-cycle tested down to -20C (-4F). Below freezing the charge rate will natural decrease. At -20C the charge rate is zero however, the battery is designed to crate heat during discharge. So, a moderate load run for 15 to 30 minutes can generate enough heat to allow the battery to accept a faster charge rate.
No. LightningVolt batteries are freeze-cycle tested down to -20C (-4F) for safe use without a heating element. LightningVolt batteries boast a near-zero discharge rate even in freezing conditions. A heating element is not necessary for majority of applications and would drain the battery in storage but an external heating pad can be utilized where necessary.
Yes.
A LiFePO4 charger is recommended for optimal performance rated for 5A – 50A. However, any charger that produces a maximum voltage of between 13.6V and 14.4V will work. Do not use any equalization or 'repair' settings designed for lead acid batteries. LightningVolt for heavy-duty trucks is designed to work with a truck’s stock charging system.
LightningVolt batteries are 25lbs (11.3Kg) which is 70% lighter than a standard lead acid battery and lighter than competing lithium batteries. This lower weight is achieved by selecting more efficient internals like 3D printed components and higher energy density prismatic cells. Weight savings is a priority for our customers so our team set out to design the lowest weight lithium battery.
LightningVolt is not intended as a cranking or engine starting battery so it does not have a CCA rating. It is designed as a deep cycle battery for auxiliary power only.
LightningVolt batteries contain an average of 1300Wh. However, for safety and longevity of the battery bank the internal battery management system limits the draw from the cells to: 1280Wh. 1280Wh is the most that can be pulled from a battery.
LightningVolt are auxiliary batteries designed to be used in electric APUs, which many trucks either already come with or have retroactively installed. You can run your electric APU on AGM or lead-acid batteries, however LightningVolt lithium batteries are designed as a more efficient upgrade. It is a simple drop-in replacement that doubles the power in your sleeper cab. However, if you don’t have an electric APU and aren’t planning to install one, LightningVolt batteries might not be a relevant upgrade for your truck.
LightningVolt is a lithium battery upgrade designed to greatly extend a truck’s auxiliary power. Instead of idling your engine to run your sleeper’s AC, warm up meals, make coffee or charge your laptop, the high power capacity and long run-time of LightningVolt batteries enables you to do all this without burning a drop of diesel. Imagine the fuel savings from running your AC for 8+ hours and your engine for 0!And since batteries normally recharge when the engine is running, which creates additional loads on the alternator – LightningVolt batteries charge much faster which slightly reduces fuel consumption while the truck is driving. Extending the run-time of your eAPU between charges and reducing the load imposed by your charging system means less time idling the engine, and in turn less money spent on fuel and DEF! Idling your engine also imposes wear and tear on your expensive engine and aftertreatment system, so avoid idling at all costs!
An electric APU with LightningVolt powers your sleeper cab’s electric compoents including AC through the night, or for your break period. LightningVolt enables double the run-time compared to lead-acid APU batteries, so you don’t need to idle your engine mid-break to charge them up! Idling uses significant amounts of fuel—much more than is needed just to power your sleeper cab. By using efficient APU batteries, you save fuel you’d otherwise waste on idling. By reducing idle times, you also reduce the wear on your engine and aftertreatment system. As the lowest duty cycle, idling produces much more soot than regular driving, clogging up your DPF and leading to increased regens. On top of this, excessive idling can increase the risk of DEF crystallization in your injectors. Idling is the lowest duty cycle and modern engines aren’t designed to handle excessive idle times, but an idle reduction running on LightningVolt batteries can protect truck systems from this!
Roadwarrior is part of the DCL Technology Group so we are committed to reducing operating costs while reducing engine emissions as much as possible. So Roadwarrior aims to price our emissions products and battery technology as competitively as possible!
LightningVolt batteries are lithium batteries which have a higher material and manufacturing cost compared to lower performing lead acid and AGM batteries. However, LightningVolt batteries last 10x longer than traditional batteries so, despite the higher upfront cost they are cheaper in the long-run. In fact, most of our customers tell us LightningVolt batteries pay for themselves within the first 3-5 months just from fuel savings by not having to idle their truck’s engine. Most trucks see an $8,000 - $10,000 savings annually through the idle reduction benefits which is why trucking fleets upgrade their trucks with LightningVolt.
LightningVolt batteries were originally designed by Roadwarrior for heavy-duty trucking applications. LightningVolt for trucks was designed and tested to work on various truck makes and models with electric power units. It is designed to be charged safely using the factory alternator and stock charging system used in multiple heavy-duty trucking applications. LightningVolt can be used in combination with the truck’s lead acid cranking battery bank and will safely maintain a float charge on the lead acid batteries which will extend the life of the engine starting battery bank. Charge and discharge parameters are different compared to the RV battery. LightningVolt designed the first battery for boats and trolling motors and features internal diodes and resistors optimized for series circuits and optimum trolling motor operation.
We do not recommend LightningVolt™ as a replacement starter battery or for jump-start applications on combustion engines. LightningVolt™ batteries are designed for long term storage and deep discharge. Engine starting is the one application when traditional lead acid batteries really excel.
LightningVolt batteries feature a proprietary power control button. A long press of the button will disconnect the internal cells from the BMS, Bluetooth connection, and any external loads so your battery will last longer in storage. The battery can be stored safely in freezing conditions, but it should not be stored in high heat.
LightningVolt batteries can be connected with other batteries using the LightningVolt DC-DC charger/isolator or other isolator device. It is not recommended to connect batteries of different chemistries, voltages, or capacities.
